Reasons why I am Vegetarian

Reasons
  • It usually benefits your health.
  • Meat obviously requires the killing of animals.  If you do not consume animals for a long period of time, you really can make a difference on the demand for meat.  Not to mention all the lives you save along the way.
  • You then have no direct impact on the mistreatment of livestock.
  • Less/No hormone intake: estrogen, growth hormone, etc
  • It is better for the environment.  We are only breeding certain species within genuses for food, and this limits their gene pools.  It kills whole ecosystems.
  • Seafood in particular: for every fish that is eaten, many more are thrown back into the ocean to die.  This number multiplies for shrimp (my previous favorite seafood).  Some of the fish we eat did not grow up in nature.  They were bred and raised on fish farms, with limited nutrients and space.
  • I did not kill any of them, nor could I have.
  • Spiritual reasons, feel free to look up the theology agreeing with vegetarianism.  It can be found in Buddhism, Hinduism, and more.

Becoming Vegetarian
I was aware of all the various reasons for becoming vegetarian.  I decided I wanted to decrease my consumption of meat/impact on the environment.  I started noticing the amount of meat I was consuming and decreasing it minimally.  Simulataneously I was influenced by the Native American tradition of giving thanks after taking any life and truly feeling gratitude and remorse.  After doing this with each meal containing a part of a life, I realized I did not need to be taking another’s life.  I could not have killed any of these animals, nor prepared them; so why was I eating them?
I decided to try being vegetarian.  It began as a simple decision to not eat meat, and see how far it would go, and how long I could do it.  I wanted to see how it would affect me; if I would crave meat; if it would noticeably benefit my health and energy.  It was not difficult for me to not eat meat, as I rarely ate meat to begin with (usually less than once a day; typical American is with every meal).  I quickly loved it.  I could literally feel a difference, and it felt great.  Every once in a while I wanted to eat meat, but I was able to resist it.  I quickly became used to not eating it, and remembering to not consider it.  It was easiest to not eat meat when I prepared the meals because I would buy the ingredients ahead of the time when I was hungry.  When we are hungry and/or crunched for time, we are more likely to binge on any food limitations i.e. sugar, meat, non-diet items, etc.
At the same time in my life, a lot of other changes were taking place.  Each of them helped each other and worked together for my transformation.  I believe becoming a vegetarian aided other desired changes.
I have been a vegetarian now for over a year, as of October 2010.  I have noticed that at different times my desire for meat changes.  Most days I do not think of eating meat, nor desire it.  Some days I vaguely want some, and other days I distinctly crave a certain dish.  At no time would I say it has been difficult to not eat meat.  I think vegetarianism came naturally to me.  At about 9 months I did not want meat at all; I was completely adjusted to not eating meat.  After a year, I am back to wanting meat every once in a while.  However, it is not a major concern or something that I miss or mourn.  If I have a particularly strong desire for meat, I remember that if I ate it, I would get sick.  That kills the desire right off.  Time and again I have had dreams in which I ate meat.  In each one, I felt sure it was real, and I knew I would be sick, and regretted it deeply.  In all cases, I had accidentally consumed it; or not realized until I had already had too much.  It is a genuine fear I would do so in real life.  After 3 weeks into being a vegetarian, I finished one of my little brother’s quesadillas, forgetting it had chicken in it.  I tried to throw up all of the chicken.  Even so, my stomach got a little upset, but not horribly.  Mind you, this was after only 3 weeks, not even a month.  A week ago, I ate a piece of cheese from a cheese tray that had bacon in it.  I had no reaction whatsoever.  It was a tiny piece of bacon, though, so little I was not sure it really had meat in it.
And now, 14 months into being a vegetarian, my sister says I smell like one.  Lol, I am not sure what that means.  I guess vegetarians smell better than omnivores!  : )

Other Low Meat-Health Options

An easy way to transition into not eating meat, one that I tried for a few months, no buying meat (not at a store or restaurant), that allows you to finish someone else’s meat, or at holidays, but not directly influence the market.

Cook meals that have a side of meat, rather than framing your entire meal around the meat dish.  This changes the amount of meat you consume, and changes the style of the meals you eat.  This style is comparable to vegetarianism, but with a small side of meat.   There is a huge difference between this and a hamburger.

My personal favorite idea for limiting your meat intake: weekday vegetarian.

Current Projects

At any one time, I can be working on a number of projects.  I guess it is because I do not want to get bored.  Today I worked on a purple quilt skirt.  I will probably be done with it in a few days; I love it!  I am also working on a special order.  I am also working on two iron-on projects, and altering a blouse.  Not to mention the projects that are sitting, ready to work on: 2 dress alterations, a blue skirt from scratch, a purple and yellow quilt skirt, 3 versions of iris impressions (see other post), a pair of tie-dye shorts, and various others.  So yes, I am keeping myself busy.  This is how I keep myself from spending all day running errands.  I have found that it is wayyy to easy to spend money when you are just looking, with no reason to leave.
How do I make a quilt skirt:
I decide on a theme or color scheme or inspiration.  Then I get all of my fabric within that spectrum.  Then I decide a size for the rectangles, and cut them out.  Then I position them all together and look at the colors next to each other.  I get special material to add layers and texture.  Some of the material is fuzzy, silky, transparent, has holes, lacy, or in some way works well with another piece of material; and makes it even further unique and fun!  Then it is off to pinning and sewing. Then making a waist and finishing the top,  bottom, and insides.  Maybe on the next one I can take pictures of the steps.

I have seen this done many times, and wanted to try it for myself.  As I had many regular T-shirts sitting around, I had plenty of material to work with.  What's great is that you can often get T-shirts for free when you volunteer or participate in events.  Then you can refashion them into something sexy that you enjoy wearing!

Iris Impressions

You have to check out this great new design for dresses.  Iris Impressions

http://irisimpressions.com/

It is really simple and ingenious.  It is just 2 pieces of different material and a really long band.  It can supposedly be worn 100 different ways.  I had to try it, and I absolutely love it!  This fascinates me in two different ways: as a fashion designer, and as a girl who loves to look gorgeous.  It should be easy to make, but you have to find nice material that is also easy to sew.  I am going to try making my own version.  It will take a while, as this requires a lot of material and time for detail.
I will attach pictures to this post!

Lingerie

I was recently commissioned by a friend to create lingerie.  This was an entirely unforeseen or foretold concept.  I immersed myself in lingerie for a few days, as I don’t know anything about how to make it personal or unique.  I like every one of my creations to be one of a kind.  I found out about fantasy costumes, lace, shine, etc.  It is a whole new world.  I enjoy it as it is a safe, easy way to explore sexual, artistic energy.  I also came to learn that Victoria’s Secret is technically Not lingerie; it is only panties and underwear.  Lingerie is all that and then some: costumes, corsets, stockings, garters, etc.  And for the price of most lingerie, you should only buy it custom made and designed; so you are completely satisfied and truly happy with your set!  Email me if you want to discuss a custom order.  We will have a very fun and interesting conversation!

If you want high fashion, but don't want to spend the money

It's fun, artistic, and travel-friendly!
The sky is the limit for you.  I recently fell in love with cutting up t-shirts, especially trying the templates by Megan Nicolay.  She currently has out two awesome books: Generation T: 108 ways to transform a T-shirt, and Generation T: Beyond fashion 120 new ways to transform a T-shirt.  They both sell for $16 each.  Basically you start with a regular T-shirt and transform it into a skirt, or a sexier T-shirt.  It is very versatile.  If you are not artsy, that's ok, she tells you exactly what to do.  And if you are artsy, you can use her ideas to make your own.  I have enjoyed starting with her idea, and changing it into something of my own.  The other great thing about this is if you require being crafty to keep you sane, like I do, this is a simple way to have 100s of options and no supplies.  Wherever you are, just go to a Goodwill or Salvation Army and buy a few guys shirts and get started.
No worries, I will post pictures of these as well!

Healthy Alternatives

Simple things you can get rid of:
sodas
candy; completely substitute with baked goods (I think you will love that idea)  basically it limits snacking to when they are available and decreases all the extra chemicals in candy
fast food, completely!  instead be prepared, bring granola bars, fruit bars, snacks you like; pack a lunch; know where healthy fast food is available; make a sandwich
fried food; that includes fries, fried chicken, etc
chips
if you have to ask, try to get rid of it; how does your body react?  how do you react emotionally (cravings, etc, you Cant, it just wont work; I consider this emotional)?  well what else could you do?  see below for more ideas
try to switch tortillas for bread; there are wheat options.  I started doing this because being diabetic is in my family, and they always say don't eat bread.  Even though I am too physically active to be diabetic, I still think it is good to decrease the likelihood I will become such.  So I limit my bread intake.

New things to try; just add them to your diet, it will help and diversify what you eat
couscous
eggplant
almond milk; soy milk; rice milk; goat milk  change off from which you drink all the time; switch off with regular milk; they all have different benefits; you do not have to be exclusive, rice milk reminds me of the mexican version of rice milk;  i cannot remember the name right now
acai fruit or juice
every type of sandwich; at our age, we have forgotten the magic behind sandwiches, it is kind of funny;  they can be absolutely delicious, and yet so simple
weird foods only vegetarians eat; go to a local/healthy food store like Sun Harvest, and look at some of the odd things they sell; ask about them, how are they eaten, with what, etc
fruit jerky- that means fruit made into a chewy edible bar like thing, and it is thin and easy to carry, like jerky

Eat More vegetables and fruit
seems obvious, doesn't it?
when you get a sweet craving, sometimes substitute with a fruit or veg; not every time, you can indulge too
try new fruits and vegetables; I am a strong believer that every different type has unknown benefits unique to it
eat more avocadoes
fruits are automatically snack sized!  and there is no packaging.  If you want a little snack, have some berries, or for a big snack, have an apple.
apples and oranges have been suggested as an appetizer 30 minutes before a meal.  they apparently rev your metabolism and get your digestive system ready to eat.

Buy fresh vegetables/fruits/whatever, Not canned
substitute with fresh
it is probably 10X better for you!
that even goes for tuna and other fish

Eat more Nuts
when you want to snack, snack on nuts, they will actually help you not be hungry
they have tons of protein
they can be added to practically anything.  i love them!  add them to salads, try something amazing and crazy: cook with them, add them to stirfry, lasagna, soup, everything!  I have probably done it all
and once again, try new ones, you may not like all of them

weekday vegetarian
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/graham_hill_weekday_vegetarian.html
Even if you decide this is not working for you, I think the simple premise is that you can alter your diet in any way you like in a similar manner.  I.e.  Weekday person who does not drink sodas; and only drinks them on the weekends.

Vegetarian Protein options (besides tofu, tempah, and other fake feeling things)nuts- even peanut butter counts!
avocado
spinach
cheese
yogurt
beans

Notice i never said try tofu.  This is not because I do not like it.  I love it, however it is so overdone.  also, it is very difficult to cook with; I think it requires a practiced hand to serve it justice.  I would wait until you fully dedicate yourself to being vegetarian or healthy for a long period of time before trying magic cooking.  Or do as I do, and order it at amazing restaurants that know how to do it right.

Make things that are versatile.
For example, on Saturday I made 15 bean soup (because I want to try every bean in the world, lol).  I ate it, it was fabulous, but i cannot finish anything I make because I am only 1 person.  So I have learned to stretch and be creative.  You cannot eat the exact same thing days in a row and enjoy it, so change it up.  I also made a spaghetti sauce, with lots of spices and made it hot and tasty.  The next day I had bean and cheese burrito for breakfast.  I can make wraps with beans, lettuce, cucumber, bell pepper, pickles, dressing on it.  I had spaghetti last night, with the sauce, and mashed up 3 spoonfuls of beans and mixed them in to increase my protein intake.  This will probably last me all week, with all sorts of options.

Experiment with food, it is fun and creative.  I have a rule in my kitchen that if I make it, I have to eat it.  This is a semi-breakable rule; if it turns out absolutely awful, don't eat it.  But if it is edible, try different spices, see if you can fix it or just throw it.  When you do this, you are playing chef, and expanding your cooking repertoire.

another easy way to limit things is to limit them to only "special occasions, when you are sharing them with someone else."  Put simply, that is how I limit alcohol, but you could do so with anything: chips, meat, baked goods, etc

Always eat things you enjoy, or you will not be able to survive with the new "diet."  As you have more successes, say after a week, then a month, then 3 or 6, congratulate yourself and have a treat.  Enjoy your success!  Encourage yourself!
you have to like what you are eating, not be missing what you could be eating; that's one of the reasons substitutes work so well  it means you do not miss the other one as much.  Some of these suggestions will easily become a habit, and won't require constant remembering.
Just remember this is for you!  And you can do this!
